Books aren’t just being taken off shelves; they’re being erased before they even hit the page. An onslaught of harassment is silencing writers. Authors across the country are being attacked for their writing. They’re accused of grooming and indoctrination. They’re subject to doxing and physical danger, and some are even facing death threats. In the face of this hate and vitriol, authors are self-censoring, reshaping the entire literary and cultural landscape.
No writer should have to choose between their safety and their voice. PEN America is defending authors’ rights.
Launching later this year, our new U.S. Author Safety program will provide safety support for writers under attack. PEN America will offer trainings, consultations, peer support networks, and other crucial safety resources to equip the literary community with tangible tools to protect the freedom to write.
