Team—

Anti-abortion advocates have long peddled an inaccurate view of abortion, one fueled by fearmongering and misinformation.

What many abortion opponents don't understand—and what many reproductive rights advocates and medical experts have long warned the public about—is that pregnancy care is a spectrum. You cannot ban or restrict abortion without affecting the entire continuum of care that millions of pregnant people rely on.

Now, a new study published in the medical journal JAMA and reported on by The 19th [[link removed]] has shown for the first time how these post- Roe abortion bans have affected miscarriage care across the United States—and the results are frightening.

Mifepristone and misoprostol are the standard of care for people experiencing early miscarriages. They are also the same medicines being targeted by anti-abortion politicians because they are used in medication abortion. But in banning access to these pills–and to abortion more broadly– they are keeping miscarriage patients from receiving that standard of care. Some patients are treated with misoprostol only. Still others have been forced to continue carrying nonviable pregnancies, which can bring medical risks or worsen their grief and trauma.

In their single-minded attempt to control people and ban abortion, anti-abortion politicians are threatening access to safe, effective medicine for everyone.

This analysis underscores something the Center has been raising the alarm about and fighting against for years: abortion bans hurt everyone. Health care decisions should be guided by science, patient needs, and medical expertise—not politics.
