NASA Chief Defends Selection of All-Male Crew for Artemis III Mission [ [link removed] ] - I’ll admit that my first reaction was that this seemed kind of overblown. It’s a test flight and all of the astronauts assigned to the flight come from a test pilot background, so the team that actually was picked is certainly solid. However, women actually make up about 40% of the current astronaut corps, so statistically it would have made sense to have a woman on the crew. There are also three current Astronaut Candidates from the last couple of classes who haven’t flown yet and actually come from a test pilot background (Rebecca Lawler, Erin Overcash, and Katherine Spies). So there were at least three very well-qualified women they could have picked… but did not. I guess the good news for those three women is that one of them is pretty much guaranteed to be on Artemis IV and walk on the Moon… right?
