From: Carol Bauer
As you know, my wife, Carol, prepares a monthly prayer alert. I hope you will share Carol's thoughts with your friends and fellow worshipers. Thank you for taking an interest in her monthly devotion. --Gary
As I write this the Democrat National Convention is now history and the Republican National Convention awaits in the days ahead. I wonder what impressions Americans had of this four-day Zoom-like event with scripted moments galore, more than its share of glitches and a general low-energy feel that left the viewer reaching for caffeine?
Here are my impressions: The overall message seemed to be anti-Donald Trump as a person, peppered with a long litany of reasons why viewers should reject his re-election. What energy that was evident throughout the event was all laser focused on Donald Trump and why he does not deserve your vote.
As is also the case in news broadcasts, what is not said is just as revealing as what is said. The focus on Joe Biden was not policy specific. References to his agenda were made in broad-brush terms wrapped in glowing idealism. Specifics were sparse if they existed at all. There was no mention at all of the violence in America's streets, which has defined the summer of 2020. Nor was the threat from communist China mentioned.
The overall message seemed to be … just vote against Donald Trump for these reasons and vote for Joe Biden for no specific reason.
In fact, the one thread that ran through all the reasons to vote for Joe was his empathy, his connection to people and his ability to rise above difficult circumstances. Don't get me wrong, these are laudable attributes. But I suspect you and I know many people with these personal qualities who would not be great presidents.
Biden's signature achievements after nearly five decades in public life were absent. And I suspect that the reasons for few specific policy promises were the underlying divisions in the Democrat Party. To get more detailed on issues would elevate one part of the shaky coalition and undermine another.
The convention felt like an effort to just get to and through Election Day by electing Biden-Harris and then figure out who's really in charge.
Another theme dominated the proceedings and ran through nearly every speech like a connecting thread. In general, the speakers didn't seem to like America and their fellow citizens very much. The litany of what is wrong with America was never-ending and depressing. There was a constant theme of identity politics and a breathless desire to point out what divides us, while never thinking to look in the mirror.
It is hard to see how such a dark and negative view of America can energize voters. I kept thinking, "Why would an undecided voter even want to vote for people who don't even like the country they are seeking to lead?"
Enough said about the past week. Looking to the week ahead and the Republican National Convention, I suspect it will have a very different feel, even though the Republican Party has had to make two major adjustments on the run.
It started out as a full-fledged in-person event in Charlotte, North Carolina. Then in early June, the typical convention event was moved to Jacksonville, Florida. Six weeks later, the Jacksonville event was cancelled, and it was announced that a significantly smaller in-person event will be held in Charlotte with none of the trappings of a typical convention.
All of these adjustments were made because of Covid-19. But even with this near constant changing of gears over the past few months, I have a few predictions for the week ahead.
I believe there will be many more live speeches in eye-catching, historical locations. I think the messages will be upbeat, unifying, pro-America, values-centered and will focus on what unites us rather than what divides us. And, I expect higher production value, which will in turn generate greater viewer interest.
In short, I suspect the contrast between the two events from policy content to energy to production value will be stark. And then, the stage will be set for a historic Fall on the campaign trail capped by Election Day on November 3rd.
The visions for America on display by the two parties are even more magnified than usual. It seems like policy differences have moved beyond academic discussions. The battlefield of ideas is now marked by cancel culture, growing violent protests and efforts to defund or marginalize law enforcement, among other things.
And, of course, on key issues the Republican Party is pro-life, while the Democrats continue to support abortion on demand. President Trump and Vice President Pence have worked tirelessly to defend religious liberty, while Democrats constantly try to shrink that fundamental right.
Please go to the Lord in prayer for the future of our country, both in the next few months and beyond. Pray that those who seek to tear down and destroy would not be successful.
Ask the Lord to strengthen those who live in American cities being ripped apart by violence. Many have lost businesses and neighborhoods that cannot be rebuilt in the age of Covid-19. Open their eyes to paths they can take that will give them a future. Ask God to prompt them to seek out others in their community of like mind so that together they can be a strong voice to weak-kneed mayors, city councils and governors.
Open the eyes of elected officials to the long-term damage being done to the economic backbone and social fabric of communities by those with an agenda of destruction. Ask our Heavenly Father to protect our law enforcement personnel. Their jobs are nearly impossible in a time when they are being attacked both with words and with dangerous projectiles. Prompt us to appreciate and thank them.
Pray that the wheels of justice for those who have broken the law would move faster. Cleanse our body politic of those who are unelected yet take the law into their own hands by justifying illegal activity and yet seem to pay no price. May the investigations still underway be concluded expeditiously with clarity so that conclusions are clear and understandable.
Remind us of the blessings of our freedoms for which millions have sacrificed their lives. Prompt us to be thankful for our freedom to worship, speak, assemble and vote and not take these for granted. Guide us to find ways in which we can effectively make our voices and views known.
Violence in America's large cities continues and local police forces have their hands tied by mayors and city councils who refuse to let them effectively address the problem. More and more the violence is moving into suburban neighborhoods. With the hands of local police tied, Americans are buying guns at a rapid pace. This is all happening in the midst of what will be a brutal political campaign.
Pray for the safety of all those running for elected office and for those tasked with protecting them. Ask God to open the eyes of all in the law enforcement community to threats against those in the public sphere. Give them quick and effective responses so that the safety of our political season and candidates is ensured.
LORD, HEAL OUR LAND.
