Friend,

Yesterday, our fundraising team sent you an email about Media Matters that
got it wrong, and I want to personally correct the record and express our
team's deepest apologies to our friends and allies at Media Matters, and
to you, our community.

The goal of the original email was to show you what a billionaire's
vindictive war on a watchdog looks like, and what it means for free
speech, the press, and independent media on the whole.

That threat is real, of course. But our email went too far. It said Musk
was trying to bankrupt Media Matters. And that's also true. But, our
framing implied that he already succeeded. And that's categorically untrue
and we deeply regret the error.

Here is what you need to know:

Yes, the fight has been real and painful for Media Matters. But the part
of the story we should have told you is that they are fighting back and
winning.

Media Matters took on the world's richest man, the Trump administration's
FTC, and two Republican attorneys general at the same time.

They beat back the Texas and Missouri attorneys general. They won a
federal injunction against the FTC's retaliatory investigation, with a
judge ruling the agency violated the First Amendment.

And the precedents they set in court are already being cited in dozens of
legal battles against this administration's overreach.

Instead of centering Musk, we should have focused on the courageous
example Media Matters is setting for all of us on how to fight back, and
asked you to support them in their ongoing fight to defend free speech
from Elon Musk's attacks.

So that's what we are doing now.

For more than two decades, Media Matters has done the critical work of
holding right-wing media accountable. [ [link removed] ]They are a pillar of progressive
media. We are proud to stand with them in their fight and encourage you to
join us by donating any amount to Media Matters today:

We regret any confusion or additional stress our note caused our friends
and partners and commit to doing better.

With gratitude for this community and solidarity with all of our partners
in this fight,
