Right now, some power-hungry politicians are determined to drive us back to one of the ugliest chapters in American history.
The Supreme Court’s decision to gut the Voting Rights Act has opened the door to efforts to strip power from the American people, especially Black voters and other communities of color — echoing a period when our laws and our political maps enforced racial segregation and propagated inequality and injustice.
This period should be ancient history — but there’s an active campaign to bring it back. This isn’t some far-off threat. It’s happening in real time.
In the weeks after the Supreme Court’s shameful ruling, states across the South rushed to rip away voting power for racial minorities — power that took decades — practically our nation's entire existence — to secure. States like Louisiana, Tennessee, and Alabama have passed congressional maps that intentionally erase majority-Black opportunity districts.
And anti-democracy leaders are lining up to follow their lead — from Mississippi to Georgia.
These leaders have shown us their hand. They've made it clear they value their own power over the rights of racial minorities to participate equally in our democracy. It's shameful — and it’s on us to shut it down. Make a donation today to strengthen our fight against racial and partisan gerrymanders. [[link removed]]
One of the most harmful parts of Jim Crow was the idea that the injustice, the unfairness, was permanent — so deeply ingrained that it couldn't be uprooted. The civil rights movement exposed that lie. People marched, sacrificed, and bled to bring Jim Crow to an end. We must carry forward that legacy today.
When we band together, when we organize, when we fight, we can fix what's broken.
With fair maps under attack across the country and more map manipulation in the works, your gift ensures that we can meet every moment to defend democracy. [[link removed]]
