Straight from the New York Times, John:
"President Trump on [March 31] stepped up efforts to promote his false claims of widespread voting fraud, signing an executive order of questionable constitutionality seeking to create a national list of citizens that would determine voting eligibility and restrict mail ballots."
Let's be clear: The president has no explicit Constitutional authority over elections, and much of this latest attack on our fundamental right to vote appears difficult to enforce and legally dubious.
This order directs the Department of Homeland Security to create a “state citizenship list” based on data from various federal databases. It also directs federal officials to send that made-up list to state election officials, and orders the attorney general to prioritize prosecution of election officials who provide ballots to voters not on the made-up list. It also directs the U.S. Postal Service not to transmit mail-in ballots from any individual not included on Trump's “state citizenship list," even though elections are mandated by the constitutional the be run by the states.
This order is yet another sign that the MAGA crew will do anything they can to codify their power permanently and silence the will of the people by suppressing and eliminating the votes we cast.
Our elections are sound and mail-in voting is secure, no matter what Trump says. Step up to defend our fundamental right to vote and the use of mail-in ballots with $35 or whatever you can today >>
