The Scalise Capitol Report

The Truth About the U.S. Postal Service

There has been a lot of attention regarding funding for the U.S. Postal Service during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Post Office lost $78 billion from 2007 through 2019, yet still has enough funding to make it through the rest of this year without an additional bailout from hard-working taxpayers. Complaints about delays and inefficiencies at the Post Office have been known for years, and that is why bold reforms are needed. However, Speaker Pelosi’s latest bailout to the failed union leadership of USPS does nothing to reform the longstanding operational inefficiencies at the Post Office in a manner that would actually benefit taxpayers, including the millions of people who rely on timely mail and package delivery.

Speaker Pelosi has consistently been holding families and small businesses hostage to her liberal demands in the middle of this pandemic, choosing to focus on a partisan, multi-billion dollar bailout for the U.S. Postal Service instead of bipartisan COVID relief for hardworking families across the country.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has rightfully taken action to make commonsense reforms and improve operations within the USPS. His announcement that he will delay further changes until after the 2020 election is evidence that his complete attention is on making sure the Postal Service will be able to fully support the demands of anyone who wants to legally vote by mail this November. His decision further shows how unnecessary Speaker Pelosi’s bailout is. I look forward to his testimony next week to hear about the efforts the USPS is taking to implement a reliable mail system that can be trusted to deliver mail on time, in an efficient and effective manner, for years to come.

Joining Tangipahoa Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

This past week, I had the honor of attending Tangipahoa Law Enforcement Appreciation Day in Hammond. These brave men and women put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe; I proudly stand with America’s law enforcement officers and remain committed to protecting their ability to carry out their brave and heroic work.

Speaking with Local Business Leaders at the Jefferson Chamber

I joined the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce for a roundtable discussion with local business leaders on how I'm working alongside President Trump to rebuild the world's strongest economy, safely reopen our schools, and provide relief to American workers and families in need.

Community Updates

  • Monitoring Gulf Coast Storms: National Hurricane Center forecast models continue to show the potential for two tropical systems to enter the Gulf of Mexico and potentially impact Louisiana next week. With the strong possibility of dangerous storms, we must stay vigilant and prepare for potential storm damage and flooding. Please continue to monitor local news and follow any advice given by local emergency officials. Louisiana has a comprehensive emergency preparedness guide. Keeping a printed a copy on hand is helpful. You can find the guide here.

  • An Update on PPP Funding: As of August 8, over 78,000 businesses in Louisiana received over $7 billion in Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan funding. This is great news for businesses who are trying to keep employees on the payroll and fuel our economic recovery!

  • The Divisive DNC: I penned an op-ed in Fox Business discussing the divisive tone at Democrats' National Convention and their platform which focuses more on hating President Trump than it does on protecting American industries, helping American families, or strengthening American security.

  • In Case You Missed It: The Trump Administration approved $30 million of shrimp purchases under the Section 32 program, which distributes emergency food assistance to states and food banks nationwide. This program will support our shrimpers who have been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, while providing U.S. shrimp proudly produced in Louisiana and the entire Gulf Coast to the families who need it most.
