The dramatic June 9 incident began when officers with the Los Angeles Police Department initiated a pursuit in Boyle Heights involving a pickup truck reported stolen. Marietta St. just before 2:30 p.m. when the driver crashed the truck and attempted to flee on foot, reportedly shooting at officers, who immediately returned fire. Gene Atkins faced 40 felony counts in connection with the attack that injured his grandmother and girlfriend and subsequent armed standoff that resulted in the shooting death of Trader Joe's store assistant manager Melyda "Mely" Corado. A gunshot from an LAPD sidearm went through the store during the gunfight, striking and killing Corado. Atkins was found not guilty of first-degree murder, and jurors were split on a charge of second-degree murder, 10-2 in favor of conviction. Atkins was convicted of all four counts of assault on a peace officer, 24 counts of false imprisonment of a hostage, three counts of attempted murder and other crimes. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said his office respects the jury's findings, but will consider whether to retry the second-degree murder charge. Agustin Vidana, 35, of Sun Valley, has been known to approach women in the area of San Fernando Road and Shelton Street, officials with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Foothill Division said in a news release. “Agustin Vidana is known to approach females who are walking in the area, and he does so with the intent to engage in a romantic relationship,” officials said. “Agustin Vidana is currently under investigation in connection with a sexual assault reported by multiple victims. Foothill Division detectives are looking for similar offenses that occurred within the Sun Valley area.” The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has filed felony charges against the 35-year-old, though the investigation remains ongoing. Sexual assault detectives have released Vidana’s photo and are asking anyone who believes they may have been victimized by him to contact LAPD Detectives Theodore Bridges or Michelle Gomez at 323-561-3272. KTLA 5 Rams' Alaric Jackson arrested on suspicion of domestic battery, LAPD sources say LA Ram Alaric Jackson was arrested for felony domestic battery Monday night at his San Fernando Valley home, LAPD sources tell NBC4. The 6-foot-7, 338-pound offensive lineman was arrested at around 11 p.m., after police were called to his home. When police arrived, they learned that Jackson and a woman had gotten into a verbal argument. Sources tell NBC4 that Jackson thought the woman was recording him with her phone and allegedly tried to take the phone out of her hand. Investigators said the woman had scratch marks on her arms. Jackson was then arrested for felony domestic battery and later released on a $50,000 bail. The 27-year-old six-year veteran played for the Iowa Hawkeyes in college. Jackson entered the league as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Rams in May 2021. Jackson was suspended by the league for two games in 2024 for violation of the its personal conduct policy. NBC 4 Reward increased to $85K in cold case murder of 4-year-old boy in Los Angeles County Reward money has been increased in the cold case murder of a 4-year-old boy in Los Angeles County, officials announced Tuesday. Salvador "Chavita" Esparza was shot and killed while standing on the porch of a relative's home in Altadena in 2016. The case remains unsolved. Another $10,000 has been added to the reward, bringing the total to $85,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion to reestablish and increase the reward. "We hope that with this reward reinstated, someone out there is willing to come forward and give us answers that can bring justice and peace to my family," Salvador's grandmother Juana Esparza said in a statement. "If you know something - anything - we beg you to come forward and give us closure." Rosanne Marquis, 71, had been operating an unlicensed in-home health care business in Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office. While running the business, Marquis is accused of stealing from “elderly dependent adults, including a veteran, and failed to both supply accurate tax returns for her business, and to make required deductions and payments to the Employment Development Department on behalf of her employees for several years,” court documents said. Although authorities have not disclosed how much money she reportedly stole, court records obtained by the Santa Barbara Independent noted that it totaled over $100,000. Before she opened Rosanne Marquis HomeCare Service, the suspect worked as a trauma nurse coordinator at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. She also previously served on the boards of the Council of Alcohol and Drug Abuse and the Alzheimer’s Women’s Initiative, the Santa Barbara Independent reported. KTLA 5 Local Government News Video: Suspect in out-of-control vehicle shoots through Mo. trooper’s window following PIT Video released by the Missouri State Highway Patrol shows the moment a fleeing suspect shot through the window of a cruiser while his own vehicle was spinning out due to a PIT maneuver. The May 7 incident unfolded as the Boone County Sheriff’s Office worked to investigate a homicide. Deputies and Columbia Police Department officers had located the suspect and initiated a vehicle pursuit. MSHP Cpl. Brandon Harris responded to assist with the pursuit. Dash camera footage shows Harris approaching the suspect’s vehicle and performing a PIT maneuver. Video shows the maneuver caused the suspect’s vehicle to lose control and spin out. Video from inside the cruiser shows a single shot entering the passenger window. The suspect had fired shots as his vehicle spun, striking the cruiser several times and nearly striking Harris. The suspect was found dead in the vehicle from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot. Harris sustained minor injuries from glass fragments. PoliceOne Supporters of L.A. Voters have not rejected a sales tax hike in L.A. County since 2012, when a transportation measure fell just short of a needed two-thirds majority with 66.1% support. The latest results show the “yes” camp ahead by a slim margin, with just more than 50% of the vote. The measure needs a simple majority to win.
