Friend --
Hello, sunshines! Julie Foudy here, and when I tell you that I’m excited for the FIFA World Cup….I’m over-the-moon excited. I was lucky enough to play in 4 World Cups myself for the USA (and win 2 of them!!!) AND I love soccer, I love soccer players, I love sports, I love the energy of competition, I love it all. And having elite soccer here in the Americas makes it even better.
Before kickoff tomorrow, though, I want to remind soccer fans (and those of you who are not fans) about responsibility.
If you are watching a match at home or out with friends and plan to enjoy beer, wine, or a cocktail, RESPONSIBILITY STARTS HERE.
Be a responsible host <[link removed]> (and guest) by staying hydrated, making sure that everyone is enjoying food and snacks, and ensuring that there are safe rides home planned in advance.
If you are lucky enough to be at the pitch itself, and decide to grab an alcohol beverage, RESPONSIBILITY STARTS HERE.
Again with the eating, drinking water, and planning (and budgeting) to get home safely. Remember to look out for your friends, too. There’s credit in the assist! Check out the Virtual Bar <[link removed]> to learn more about how alcohol may affect you.
If you are a parent, a caregiver, or around kiddos—whether it’s at a World Cup match, a pee-wee league game, anything in-between, or just enjoying an ordinary day, RESPONSIBILITY STARTS HERE.
Empowering good decision-making starts with having conversations <[link removed]> about right and wrong, values and expectations, and safety. These convos start early and happen often—whether they are about alcohol or not! Build the foundation NOW and allow the talks to mature as your kids do. Remember, too, that you are your kids’ first teacher. Modeling responsible behaviors <[link removed]> sets the stage for solid decision making in the future.
And remember—it’s a red card to serve alcohol to anyone underage. Most kids don’t drink. And delaying the onset of drinking reduces the chances of alcohol use disorders in the future.
Check in with yourself, because more than anything RESPONSIBILITY STARTS HERE.
If and when you choose to drink, do so mindfully. World Cup soccer runs through mid-July, so don’t overdo it. And always remember to find your “why”— never drink to mask anger, anxiety, or frustration. You’ll be glad you made these responsible decisions every time.
Now let’s go play some soccer!
