Friend, we’ve all heard the slogan “America is a nation of immigrants.”

And it’s true — there is no America without immigration, from the original British colonies, to the founding of the United States, to today.

If Republicans like Trump and Nancy Mace think you have to be born in the states to be a ‘real American,’ then they simply don’t understand our history.

Alexander Hamilton was born in Saint Kitts and Nevis, but that didn’t stop him from fighting for American independence, serving as the first Treasury Secretary, and getting his face on the $10 bill.

Joseph Pulitzer was born in Hungary, but is regarded as one of the most important newspaper publishers in American history, with the most prestigious award for journalism still carrying his name.

Renowned thinkers and inventors like Alexander Graham Bell, Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking were all born abroad, but came to America to advance their fields and contribute to America’s scientific prowess.

And it would take an entire second email to list every famous immigrant business leader, athlete, actor, writer, or musician who has contributed so greatly to American life, from the Warner Brothers to Rihanna.

Those famous names coincide with millions of immigrants who made America what it is today; immigrants who built railroads to connect our country, plowed fields to feed their fellow Americans, worked in factories during our industrial boom, and chipped in to our great melting pot through art, music, food, language, traditions, and new ideas.

America is a nation of immigrants, and nothing Republicans have to say will change that.

There are currently 19 members of Congress who immigrated to the United States, including Ilhan Omar. Our movement fights for their right — whether Democrat or Republican — to represent their communities and be part of the work to improve and govern America. We don’t care what Nancy Mace thinks.
