Dear Friend, Every now and then, I feel compelled to write a different kind of column—one that is less about legislation and policy and more about the person you elected to represent you. Who I am. What I believe. What I stand for. What I fight for. And what each of you means to me. This is one of those times.   If you asked me what my greatest passion and purpose in life is—what I believe Christ has called me to do—I would tell you without hesitation: to stand beside victims of domestic abuse. To fight battles they often cannot fight alone. To help them navigate life during and after abuse. To help them find resources, understand their options, and make their way through a legal system that can sometimes feel overwhelming and impossible to understand. This work is not easy. The outcomes are not always what I pray for or hope to see—far more often than I would like. But even in those difficult moments, I know I am walking in the purpose God placed on my life. In 2022, I founded The Windsong Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing hope, help, and healing through Christ to victims of domestic violence. Through this work, I have had the privilege of walking alongside survivors during some of the darkest seasons of their lives and helping them find a path forward. Serving in the Virginia General Assembly has given me an additional opportunity to further that mission—not only through direct service and advocacy, but also by working to improve laws that many of us in this field believe need to change. One example is legislation I introduced that will take effect July 1 and updates Virginia’s stalking laws to include cyberstalking. Stalking no longer exists only in person. In today’s digital world, victims are increasingly targeted through telephone calls, text messages, emails, social media, and other forms of electronic communication. Our laws must reflect the realities people face today. This is only one step. I am already preparing a comprehensive package of domestic violence legislation for the 2027 General Assembly session to continue advancing protections, support systems, and accountability in this area. But there is another part of who I am that many people may not know. While I have always been involved in the Republican Party, much of that began because of my father. He believed deeply in civic responsibility and taught me from an early age that voting matters, elections matter, and local involvement matters. Because of his example, I became active in campaigns and served in different positions within the local party over the years. Yet if I am being completely honest, I have never viewed myself as someone who is deeply political. I have always believed public service should be centered on ideas, solutions, and results—not personal attacks. I believe candidates should tell people what they plan to do, explain their record, and earn support based on their values and actions—not by tearing down others, especially within their own party. Too often today, politics seems to reward division, assumptions, and conflict. As someone whose faith guides my life, I believe our words matter. Scripture calls us to speak truth, show grace, and remember that every person carries dignity and worth. I recently read a quote that stayed with me: assassinating someone else’s character does nothing to improve your own. That thought has stayed with me. If Christ came not to condemn the world but to offer truth, grace, and redemption, then I believe we should be careful that our public discourse reflects those values as well. That does not mean we avoid disagreement. Healthy debate is important. Accountability matters. But I believe we are strongest when we focus more energy on inspiring people to participate, engage, and vote than on tearing each other down. At the same time, I recognize that my responsibility as your State Senator extends far beyond the issues I feel personally called to champion. I am here to represent every person in our district and to make decisions that impact everyday life for families across Southside Virginia—whether that means fighting to help you keep more of your hard-earned money in your wallet, supporting policies that keep our communities and families safe, protecting your constitutional rights including your Second Amendment rights, expanding opportunity, and working to ensure healthcare remains accessible for those who need it. You may not always agree with every vote I take—and that is okay. But I hope you always know my decisions are guided by faith, principle, and a sincere desire to do what I believe is best for the people I represent. At the end of the day, elections come and go. Character remains. I do not see this work as politics. I see it as purpose. I believe God placed me in this position—not for status, recognition, or titles—but to use this platform to be a voice for those who feel unheard, fight for those who feel forgotten, and serve every constituent entrusted to me.
