We can’t let Trump and DeJoy sabotage the election.

Indivisibles,

Yesterday, when Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) asked Postmaster General Luis DeJoy if he’ll be bringing back the mail sorting machines that have already been removed across the country, DeJoy answered: “There’s no intention to do that...They’re not needed.”

He’s referencing the more than 600 machines that have been removed from key swing states like Florida, Texas, Michigan, etc.-- during a pandemic, in which millions of Americans will be relying on the Postal Service to vote in the election. We don’t buy it, and neither should you -- which is why we’ve got one VERY important ask of you: are you showing up to a Save the Post Office event today?

Today at 11 am local time, activists all over the country are gathering (safely! with masks!) at their local post office to demand a fair election in November. This is a crucial moment ahead of the election, and we need you to join other Indivisibles, as well as folks from MoveOn and other partners, to ensure we have a safe election.

If you’re ready to grab a mask and hit the (socially-distanced) streets, click the link here. If you’ve already signed up, keep reading for updates on the Postmaster General’s hearing and more to-dos for this weekend and Monday.

Updates on the USPS and a few more to-dos

Yesterday, in his first hearing before the Senate, DeJoy testified on the state of the Post Office among reports that he’s strategically dismantling key infrastructure necessary for the processing of mail-in ballots ahead of November. He’s been in office since June, and already we’re seeing some devastating impacts.

Not only are his policies affecting the ability of USPS to process ballots -- but they’ve had an impact on communities in need, including seniors, veterans, rural towns, indigenous populations, and people reliant upon the Postal Service for life-or-death deliveries like medications and social security checks.

DeJoy claims that the dramatic delays are due to Covid-19, but the disease has been around since March in the United States, and the delays started when his policies were implemented in mid-July.

While this hearing was a good first step, Congress must do more to hold the Postmaster General accountable for the delays and intentional sabotage of our elections. DeJoy has already caused massive damage to the functioning of the postal service and there are still many, many questions that need to be addressed. The American people deserve to know more about his financial conflicts of interest, what the vetting process looked like which allowed a GOP donor to be selected in such a pivotal position months before the 2020 election, and what role the Trump administration had in undermining this American institution.

Until we know more, we’ve got to keep up the pressure. If you’re fired up and ready to do more, check out our to-dos:

This biggest takeaway from this busy, news-filled week about the Postal Service is that public pressure is working. DeJoy testified yesterday because folks around the country demanded answers. Today the House is voting on the Delivering for America Act, we’ve got a huge mobilization happening in a few hours, and on Monday, DeJoy testifies in the House. This is all thanks to you and your continued activism.

In solidarity,
