Dear John,
The new Long-Term Trend NAEP is out today, showing that America’s 13 year olds, who were in elementary school when schools were closed, have continued to fall backwards in math scores and are stalled out in reading. America’s 9 year olds, who were on the cusp of kindergarten when the pandemic hit, are showing signs of recovery.

The Long-Term Trend NAEP has remained essentially unchanged since the early 1970s, making it the closest thing we have to a constant yardstick over the last 50 years. It does not, however, offer the state-by-state breakdown of results like the main NAEP.

Here are the headlines:
1. The split by age is the big story

Here's how Chalkbeat visualized ([link removed]) the results:
2. The bottom 10% of students are struggling in math

When you dig deeper and compare the highest-performing students with the lowest, what you see is that the lowest performers among 13 year olds are getting the worst math results in the past fifty years, whereas for other ages and other subjects we’re seeing a more positive trend.
3. Students aren't reading for fun

The percentage of 9-year olds who say they read every day for fun dropped to 37%, which is the lowest number on record. Here’s how NPR visualized ([link removed]) the results:
