John,
I love this time of year because Pride Month is, at its heart, a celebration of resilience, community, joy, and the freedom to live openly as ourselves.
As a queer person raising her family here in Connecticut, Pride always feels deeply personal to me. It’s a reminder that the ability to love openly, build a family, and feel safe and supported in our communities is something generations of LGBTQ+ people fought hard for β€” often at enormous personal cost.
But even as we celebrate, Pride Month is also a call to action.
Across the country, extremists are trying to turn back the clock. They are targeting trans youth, banning books, attacking teachers and families, and introducing hundreds of anti-LGBTQ+ bills in state legislatures designed to divide people and make vulnerable communities feel less safe, less visible, and less valued.
Here in Connecticut, we are fighting back because we know who we are. We are a state that leads with love, inclusion, and dignity.
In 2008, Connecticut became one of the first states in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage. That victory did not happen by accident. It happened because advocates organized, families spoke up, and elected leaders refused to back down in the face of fear and political pressure.
That history matters because it reminds us that progress is never inevitable. Every right we enjoy today exists because people chose courage over silence and community over cruelty.
And this year, we are not just defending what we have built, we are continuing to build more.
Connecticut Democrats are working to strengthen our shield laws protecting providers of gender-affirming care, safeguard LGBTQ+ students from discrimination in schools, and expand access to reproductive healthcare for LGBTQ+ people and families.
This month is a reminder that when we continue showing up for one another, when we refuse to let hate and division win, we can keep building a Connecticut where every person is protected, valued, and free to be themselves.
Happy Pride Month, and thank you for being part of this work.
