It’s clear the United States Postal Service is under assault. I am alarmed by new reports revealing that after the election, the Postmaster-General, Louis DeJoy, plans to specifically target Alaskans by raising prices for our mail. 

According to USPS sources who talked to the Washington Post:

If DeJoy isn’t stopped, these cuts would be devastating for Alaskans, especially ones living in rural communities. Ted Stevens pushed the bypass mail system through Congress in the early 80s, and it serves as a lifeline for rural communities inaccessible by roads.

When I asked Alaskans earlier this year what cuts to the postal service would mean for their lives, we got many responses about how it would make it impossible for them to get essential items like groceries and medications. One person told me, “I could not stay in my home without the USPS.”

In the past, Alaska’s leaders have fought tooth and nail to protect the bypass mail system. But these days, our only representative, Don Young, is no longer delivering for Alaskans.

After 47 years in Congress, you’d think Don Young would have the clout to demand an end to the attacks on Alaska’s postal service. But Don Young’s party bosses are pressing forward while Don Young refuses to work across the aisle to find a solution. 

I’m ready to be an enthusiastic champion for all Alaskans and do whatever it takes—and work with whoever it takes—to protect our mail system in Congress. But I can’t get there without you by my side.
