Feminist movements around the world are being asked to do the impossible: confront rising authoritarianism, climate disaster, anti-rights attacks, economic precarity, and political violence while also caring for their communities in the absence of functioning and inclusive public systems. What keeps movements and activists going? Our work of nearly thirty years with frontline feminist activists shows that the answer to that question is collective care.

Our new report Putting Out Fires till We Burn Out Stories and Lessons from Collective Care in the Balkans and Caucasus ([link removed]) shares some of our learnings and illuminates the quiet, persistent labor that sustains feminist movements in the South Caucasus and Western Balkans through times of crisis, war, and precarity.

It is a practice and a refusal to abandon each other in the face of systems designed to isolate and deplete.
