The physical demarcation of the Kawahiva territory begins

Dear Jack,

When you take a minute to send our email actions, you join tens of thousands in our movement making a stand for Indigenous rights.

I wanted to show you just a few of the recent successes that have been powered by our supporters’ longstanding commitment to the peoples we work with:

KAWAHIVA

Just over a month ago, the authorities in Brazil began the demarcation – physical marking out on the ground – of the uncontacted Kawahiva people’s territory. This is an incredible achievement after two decades of sustained pressure, alongside Indigenous organizations – 50,000 of you had emailed the authorities, urging them to start the demarcation, which is now over halfway through. We’re watching closely to make sure it’s completed.

MASHCO PIRO

For many years, you’ve taken action in support of the uncontacted Mashco Piro people in Peru. Their forest was not only sold off for logging, but that logging was then certified as “ethical” by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Your lobbying of the FSC had already forced them to cancel the certification. The FSC has now gone one step further under your pressure: they’ve committed not to certify ANY logging concession in Peru if it’s inside uncontacted people’s territory.

This was a major victory. But the fight goes on to get Peru’s government to protect all the Mashco Piro territory, and revoke all logging concessions on their land.

UNESCO

In April over 6,000 of you called on UNESCO to scrap World Heritage status for Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area. UNESCO had previously implied that the Maasai are a threat to Ngorongoro, and authorities in Tanzania cite the UNESCO status to justify the eviction of thousands of Maasai people from their land.

Your actions have already had a powerful impact: UNESCO released a statement saying that forced evictions are incompatible with human rights. We’re keeping up the pressure, though, until they recognize that no place should remain a World Heritage site if it’s used as the rationale for evictions.

Thank you for standing with Indigenous peoples around the world. Even in the darkest of times, your solidarity is making a real difference to the lives of countless Indigenous people who would otherwise have few allies.

Kind regards,
Simonas Bartulis
