Hello,
When Labor Day first became a holiday in 1894, few protections for workers existed and their voices were often drowned out. The blood and sweat of generations of workers created workplace protections for all Americans and helped build the middle-class.
Many families, including mine, knew that working in the coal mines was dark and a dangerous way to make a living, but they did it -- despite the risk -- in the hopes of providing a better life for their loved ones.
It's inspiring to look back on the workers who chose a life of labor while organizing to make it safer and better paying for themselves and those who came after.
We need that inspiration this Labor Day.
Our nation has a basic obligation to the women and men of organized labor and all workers. We must commit to raising wages for working and middle-class Pennsylvanians. We must ensure that they too benefit when our economy is strong and refuse to allow our budgets to be balanced on their backs.
We must also ensure that our workplaces are safe and provide economic security for those who suffer from work-related injuries and illnesses. Too many of our retired coal miners are being denied the pensions they worked for their entire lives, and have been denied black lung benefits they need to live with dignity.
At the same time, far too many of our neighbors and our coworkers still lack even basic benefits like paid sick leave and family leave, and too many are subjected to workplace harassment on a regular basis.
This Labor Day, we must recommit to ensuring every worker has a fair shot on a level playing field. I'll continue to do my part in the U.S. Senate, and I hope I can count on you to stand with me.
Happy Labor Day,
Bob Casey
