One month ago, I stood on the floor of the Tennessee House and watched my own colleagues redraw our congressional maps.
I voted no. But in a Republican supermajority, all I could do was make my voice heard. I couldn’t stop what was coming, and they knew it.
I watched them carve Memphis into three pieces and split Nashville into five, draining Black voting power and shoving working families into districts stretched across hundreds of miles — all to make sure the people most likely to demand change would have the least say in who represents them. And when Tennesseans packed the gallery to protest, they sent in state troopers to clear them out.
A month ago, I wasn't even sure I'd run for office again. My wife, Ericka, and I had talked about stepping back for a while — catching our breath, being present for our girls. It was a real decision, made at our kitchen table.
But standing on that floor, watching them try to write us out of our own democracy, something lit back up in me. That day set me on this path, and I haven't looked back since.
I couldn't stop them at the statehouse. But with you, I plan to beat them at the ballot box and defend our democracy from the halls of Congress in Washington, D.C.
