Political junkies are being entertained by the contretemps of the Democratic Party in dealing with US Senate candidate Graham Platner of Maine. His job is to knock off the only congressional Republican still standing in the Northeast, Senator Susan Collins.
This election is crucial if the Democrats want to regain the Senate majority. Furthermore, the US Senate is no longer “the greatest deliberative body” as it once billed itself. Rather our senators have descended into irrelevance, with individuals like Senator Chris Murphy reduced to recording videos of himself screaming anti-Trump screeds rather than proposing any useful remedies for out-of-control housing, food and medical costs.
But there is one time when Senator Murphy’s vote and those of other senators is crucial to public policy – when confirming or rejecting a judicial nominee, especially a nominee for the Supreme Court.
Decades ago, liberals figured out that changing five minds was easier than changing millions and used the Supreme Court to impose their views on the public – no prayer in public schools, legal abortion, legal gay marriage, climate change taxes, maps gerrymandered to elect Democrats and allowing illegal immigrants the right to free education along with the right to sue – which effectively gave illegals free health care.
And when conservatives rebelled, judicial nominations became bloodsport as manifested by the confirmation battles of Robert Bork, Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh.
But the conservatives won thanks to President Trump’s appointments. At least for now. The Supreme Court threw Roe v Wade (the decision to legalize abortion) in the circular file and recently allowed the Republicans to gerrymander as well as the Democrats.
And liberals are livid. These people are used to getting their way without having to dirty their hands convincing the hoi polloi of their superior wisdom.
In the 2024 election, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer openly stated that if the Democrats win the presidency and control of the Senate, they will abolish the filibuster and pack the Supreme Court with liberal judges who will decree the law of the land like a feudal monarch by making reinstating legal abortion nationwide again, confiscating guns, declaring illegal immigrants to be citizens so they can vote, abolishing the Electoral College etc.
Enter Maine’s Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner. The blueblood scion of a prominent attorney, Platner attended one of the most exclusive boarding schools in the country - Hotchkiss - although he was thrown out for not attending class. But now he is pretending to be a working-class oyster farmer, even though he can’t tell an oyster from an aardvark. And that’s just for starters.
For twenty years, he proudly had the Totenkopf tattooed on his chest. This Nazi symbol is much worse than the swastika. It is the skull and cross bones that the prison guards at the concentration camps proudly wore on their hats as they marched Jews into the gas chambers. And Platner knew this, even bragging to one of his girlfriends about “my Totenkopf.” But Bernie Saunders, who is Jewish, proudly supports Platner.

In his now deleted Reddit posts [ [link removed] ], Platner said rural Mainers were racist and stupid. He stated women who were victims of sexual assault should “just take some responsibility for themselves” to avoid attacks and “act like an adult for f**ks sake.” He concluded from his bartending experience that Blacks were lousy tippers. He made fun of gays. He has admitted to being a communist. He described an American soldier who was killed by the Taliban as “a dumb mother**ker did not deserve to live.”
The New York Times reported [ [link removed] ] that Planter sent suggestive texts to other women while married and that his former girlfriends stated he treated them violently, with one woman stating he grabbed her so hard that he bruised her shoulders and then shoved her in a room and locked the door.
Yet Platner’s wife, in statements that would make Hilliary Clinton blush, said Platner was a fine husband.
And to mention what he claimed to do while sitting in a porta-potty [ [link removed] ] is too disgusting to mention in this article.
But the Democrats who routinely accuse Trump of being a Nazi, misogynist, homophobe or whatever is the latest insult de jour, couldn’t careless when their candidate is the real thing on steroids. All they care about is how he will vote on Supreme Court nominations.
But the problem the Democrats have is that the Republican Party is no longer run by the feckless Bushes and Romneys; it is run by the ruthless Donald Trump. And President Trump will make sure Platner’s baggage is plastered all over the air waves and on social media not only in Maine, but in every congressional swing district and Senate toss-up state. And the liberals will howl with indignation as their hypocrisy is exposed.
So, the Democrats must decide and decide quickly whether to stay with Platner who will almost certainly win the Democratic Primary Tuesday June 9 or figure out how to remove him from the ballot just like they did to President Biden when his dementia was exposed during his debate with Donald Trump.
Stay tuned.
