$1, John.
That’s the day rate immigrants are paid for their labor while detained in
government contracted, privately run detention centers.
And that $1 a day rate is the only way the over 60,000 people in detention
centers can earn any money at all while detained. On that wage, it would
take more than 2 days to buy a bar of soap. More than 3 days to buy a can
of tuna.

Detention Center Contractors Exploit Immigrant Detainees With $1 Per Day
Pay'
Let me be clear — this cruelty is a business model. A business model
lining the pockets of the same greedy corporations funneling money
directly into Trump’s campaign.
GEO Group, the largest ICE detention contractor in the country, made over
$254 million in 2025. And while immigrant detainees can hardly afford a
bar of soap, the CEO took home $11.3 million this year.
The more Trump escalates his mass detention campaign, the more these
corporations make, the more they invest in making sure he never stops.
That is egregious. No one should be able to profit off of immigrant labor,
and no president should be able to weaponize our government to use human
beings as a revenue stream.
That’s why I introduced the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act — to shut
down for-profit detention centers and require DHS to treat anyone detained
by our government with basic human dignity, starting with a minimum wage.
I refuse to let this administration outsource suffering to the highest
bidder. It’s inhumane, and I will not stop fighting until we put an end to
it.
