There is a deadly Ebola outbreak spreading in the Democratic Republic of the Congo right now, and the United States — the country that once led the global response to exactly this kind of crisis — can't do much about it.
Why? Because Donald Trump (with the help of Elon Musk’s DOGE) dismantled every tool we had built to respond exactly to this kind of crisis.
Trump slashed funding to WHO, shut down USAID entirely, and made cuts to the CDC. Oh — and right now, the Trump administration is in the process of reducing the health aid it gives to the DRC and Uganda, the two countries being hit hardest by this Ebola epidemic.
Every single one of these moves has weakened the global health systems that help contain outbreaks like this one, and now, aid workers on the ground have confirmed that our funding cuts have hindered their ability to respond quickly and effectively.
And let's be clear about what else this administration has done to our foreign assistance: they ordered $10 million in contraceptives — already purchased with taxpayer dollars — to be destroyed. They incinerated 500 tons of emergency food, enough to feed 27,000 starving children for a month, even after the U.N. offered to distribute it before it expired.
And now, more people are unnecessarily suffering and dying of Ebola in Africa, because of our government’s dangerous cuts.
You can’t say you care about Americans’ safety, and then gut the very infrastructure that keeps dangerous diseases from reaching our shores in the first place. Ebola doesn't stop at borders, and neither do the consequences of this administration's recklessness.
The bottom line is that foreign assistance isn't charity. It’s about making the world a safer, healthier, more just place, and by containing crises before they become our crises, we protect Americans, too.
Trump doesn't seem to understand that — or maybe he just doesn't care. Either way, the threat of this outbreak is just one more reason we need to flip the House in November.
