Even when reports about massive fraud tied to taxpayer-funded childcare programs started surfacing, most legacy outlets barely touched it.
The story was complicated, politically uncomfortable, and easy for the national media to quietly overlook.
But independent journalist Nick Shirley didn’t overlook it.
He grabbed a camera, went to the locations reported to be receiving taxpayer money, knocked on doors, and documented what he found:
Facilities receiving large sums of taxpayer funding that appeared empty. Serious questions about where the money was actually going. And a story that suddenly millions of Americans couldn’t ignore.
His investigation exploded online. Members of Congress started asking questions. And a scandal that had been quietly buried was forced into the national spotlight.
