Dear Friend,
The United States Postal Service (USPS) connects all corners of our nation, delivering to every address in our country and allowing folks to send and receive correspondence reliably and at a reasonable price.
This is key for millions of Americans: those who live in rural areas, those who have no broadband internet, those who have difficulties leaving their homes, those who own small businesses, or simply those who benefit from the convenience of receiving goods, medications, groceries, or important government correspondence – from driver’s licenses and tax refunds, to SNAP benefits, social security cards and mail-in ballots – right at their doorstep.
Unfortunately, the Trump Administration has demonstrated that it’s willing to throw a wrench into this system with controversial new policies that have delayed mail delivery. Many have called these actions an attempt to suppress the vote in the November election, at a time when many Americans are looking to vote by mail.
Without USPS as we know it, Americans would be subject to the whims of private mail delivery companies, which could choose to charge exorbitant prices for mail delivery or outright refuse to serve difficult-to-reach areas. That’s why I’ve been fighting to reverse any changes that undermine our Postal Service.
So far, I’ve called on the Postmaster General to answer for service delays, and I’ve urged him not to take any further action that makes it harder for states to mail ballots. I’ve also demanded immediate action to ensure that veterans can count on the timely delivery of prescription drugs, and most recently, I asked Virginia’s election registrars to ensure that all Virginians can access their right to vote.
On Tuesday, the Administration announced that certain policy changes would be suspended until after the election, but I ultimately think it’s going to be on Congress to undo the damage that’s already been done and put the suspension in law before the Postmaster General changes his mind. That’s why I’m going to keep working to pass a bill to protect our postal system and the essential service it provides.
I hope you’ll take a minute to fill out the survey below and let me know if you’ve recently experienced any delays or trouble with USPS services. Additionally, If you want to share your thoughts on another issue that’s important to you, you can send me an email any time using the form on my Senate website. You can also follow me on Facebook and Twitter. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
