"The state's obsession with reopening our schools, regardless of the safety of our children and our teachers, again shows just how state education is very much part of the front line of the resistance to neoliberalism. In the UK, Bodger Johnson is claiming it is a "moral duty" to reopen schools in September. In the U.S., among other ghastly education policies, Trump says "the money should follow the student," further weaponizing the pandemic to threaten public education and push privatization. Neither are previously known for their commitment to moral duties or protecting students and workers. They are cynically gambling with children's lives. Bodger says opening schools may well mean pubs will have to close, presumably because he calculates the casualty rate will be acceptably lower and acceptably beneficial to "The Economy." Once again, we see the state viewing education as an instrumental means to achieve the aims of the ruling classes. I hope the book will provide a useful counter vision of education that will encourage our opposition to this instrumentalisation of our children."
–Robb Johnson, author of The People's Republic of Neverland: The Child versus the State
There's still time to help us publish Robb's book about how we ended up with dysfunctional mass education systems and how to transform them into democratic educational spaces where kids can grow, not up, not old, but as individuals.
If the campaign reaches $8,000, we will release a digital download of ten songs by Robb Johnson to all backers.
