Congressman Crenshaw here,

This week, I continued to highlight the encouraging downward trend in COVID-19 hospitalizations in Houston. I also called on Speaker Pelosi to bring legislation to the floor that would provide much-needed relief for Houston businesses, and debunked the conspiracy about the USPS that is being pushed by Democrats.

Please reach out to my offices if you have a concern, want to hear what we’re working on in Congress, or are having trouble with a federal agency. I have a full team in Texas and in the nation's capital ready to assist you. Be sure to stay up to date by following me on TwitterFacebook, and YouTube. For a behind-the-scenes look, follow my staff's official Instagram account.

Now, let's catch up.

DOWNWARD TREND CONTINUES

Over the last two months, Texans have shown the true meaning of Houston Strong. The downward trend in COVID-19 hospitalizations has continued for weeks, thanks to the relentless efforts of our frontline health care heroes and Texans taking the proper personal precautions to slow the spread.

We cannot grow complacent. We need to keep wearing masks and social distancing to make sure this trend continues so we never have to lock down our economy again.

Speaker pelosi needs to take up the restart act

Nancy Pelosi has put partisan politics over passing solutions for the American people during this pandemic. Instead of continuing to provide bipartisan COVID relief measures for struggling people in our state and across the country, Democrats have focused on partisan messaging bills. That must stop.

That is why I am calling on Nancy Pelosi to bring the RESTART Act to the House floor for a vote. The RESTART Act would provide much-needed relief for restaurants, gyms, hotels, retailers, and other businesses and provide flexibility with Paycheck Protection Program to use it effectively for their business. This bill would also provide funding for hard-hit businesses for the remainder of the year and provide loan forgiveness to these job creators.

I have spoken to many small businesses in our district who have told me how this bill would help them keep their doors open and their employees paid. Nancy Pelosi needs to bring this bill up for a vote - call her office and tell her to bring the RESTART Act to the floor: (202) 225-4965

HERE'S THE TRUTH ABOUT THE POSTal service

Democrats have shamelessly pushed a conspiracy theory that the Postal Service is being sabotaged ahead of the November election. It is nonsense, and you need to hear the facts.

Is the USPS really taking away mail collection bins off the street all of the sudden? Is this a new practice that the current administration is implementing?

No. The Postal Service regularly removes mailboxes for lack of use and relocates them. In fact, from 2011 – 2016 – under the Obama Biden Administration - roughly 14,000 mailboxes were removed according to the USPS Inspector General.

Why are mail sorting machines being taken offline all of the sudden? Is this a new practice that the current administration is implementing?

No. As the Wall Street Journal points out, overall mail volume has fallen 33% since 2006. As mail became increasingly digital, there was less of a need for old sorting machines that are often expensive to maintain. The President of the American Catalog Mailers Association agrees, and said that sorting machines have been taken offline for years and it is actually a good thing because we shouldn’t be paying for antiquated technology that we do not need.

Is the Postal Service ill-equipped to handle the uptick in mail-in ballots for the November election without additional funding?

No. The Postal Service currently has $14 billion in cash and under the CARES Act passed into law earlier this year, and the Postal Service has the option of receiving an additional $10 billion from the Treasury Department.

The Postal Service delivers 471 million pieces of mail on an average day. Approximately 158 million people are registered to vote and, while it is likely more will vote by absentee ballot this fall, many will still vote in person. Even the New York Times noted: “Experts agree that the Postal Service has the raw capacity to absorb additional ballots, even if 150 million people decided to vote by mail…”

Nevertheless, the Postmaster announced that no more mailboxes will be removed and the Administration has said that no additional sorting machines will be taken offline, to help calm the partisan conspiracy theorists. But the lying needs to stop.
