Email from Defend Our Courts It starts at the highest levels with SCOTUS. Then it trickles down to conservative State Supreme Courts. Finally, it trickles down to the streets where extremists take the hint and turn the state sanc John, On April 28, SCOTUS delivered the historic Callais ruling to gut the Voting Rights Act (VRA) - the greatest rollback of civil rights in America since Jim Crow ended in the 1960s. Within less than a month of the ruling, the far-right Louisiana state government quickly canceled elections and passed a map to eliminate one of their formerly mandated majority-Black districts. But even that wasn’t enough, extremists are now pushing for a map with all majority-white districts that will remove both of LA’s black Congressmen. One lawmaker speaking on these redistricts astutely called this process out for what it is: A political lynching. Sadly, that wasn’t even the only political lynching that Louisiana saw last month and just yesterday a State Supreme Court ruled in favor of the mob that carried it out: In 2024, a wrongly incarcerated Black man, who fought for his own exoneration was elected to become Clerk of the Criminal Court in New Orleans. Rather than allow him to be sworn in, MAGA passed legislation to eliminate his office before he could be sworn in. That man is Calvin Duncan. He taught himself law behind bars. Fought for his freedom and was exonerated. He then ran for Criminal Court Clerk in New Orleans to break the system that stole 28 years of his life. And he won. Yesterday, the Louisiana Supreme Court, the same Court that is set to uphold Louisiana‘s new Jim Crow style map, ruled that the barbaric actions of the Louisiana state legislature to eliminate Calvin Duncan‘s office was constitutional. During the time of Jim Crow Black disfranchisement went hand in hand with lynchings. How long until these political lynchings turn into real lynchings? It starts at the highest levels with SCOTUS ruling in favor of political disenfranchisement against Black people. Then it trickles down to conservative State Supreme Courts who run cover for their extremist governors and legislatures. Finally, it trickles down to the streets where extremists take the hint and turn the state sanctioned political violence into real physical violence. These courts are the head of the Hydra. If we hope to stop the violence before these political lynchings become real lynchings it must begin at the courts. Defend our Courts is dedicated to cleaning house at the Supreme Court of the United States by any means necessary, including by packing the Court with liberal justices. We also fight at the state supreme court level to defend courts with Democratic majorities and capture those with conservative majorities. It’s now or never. Things are rapidly escalating and unless we stop these conservative courts now it will be too late. We are at the spearhead of this fight and it is imperative that you join us.
