After a federal judge here in Virginia issued a court order temporarily barring the DOJ from handing out cash prizes to insurrectionists and he faced waves of blowback even within his own party, Donald Trump has decided to “drop” his $1.8 billion slush fund.
This is good news — but it’s not enough.
We need to enshrine into law that no president, Trump or otherwise, can steal American taxpayer dollars for their own personal and political use.

With the $1.8 billion Trump wanted to use to reward January 6th insurrectionists, we could cover every Virginian’s SNAP benefits, every Virginian’s ACA tax credits, childcare for a year for 100,000 Virginian infants, or rent for a year for 80,000 Virginian residents. But instead, he wanted to hand that cash to criminals and traitors. It’s clear who Trump cares about — and it’s not the American people.
I’m proud to be cosponsoring legislation not only to put a 100% tax on any reward collected from Trump’s slush fund, but to prohibit any president from creating this kind of absurd and wasteful slush fund in the future.
