Two anti-choice extremist male legislators in North Carolina recently introduced legislation that would legalize killing those who seek an abortion, abortion providers, and advocates.

You read that right: According to USA Today, this bill defines life as beginning at “fertilization.” Anyone in North Carolina could be charged with attempted murder for seeking an abortion, and as stated in the bill, “Any person has the right to defend his or her own life or the life of another person, even by the use of deadly force if necessary, from willful destruction by another person.” This legislation would also outlaw IVF and some forms of birth control.

It’s highly unlikely that this bill will become law. But we still need to be paying close attention.

As Jessica Valenti from Abortion, Every Day stated, since the fall of Roe, bills to punish abortion seekers as murderers are becoming more common. “Over a dozen states considered the bills last year, and the number of co-sponsors grows every session.” Once fringe positions, these so-called abortion “abolitionists” are now being featured at Turning Point USA events, have op-eds published in major outlets, and their stances are being added to the platforms of state Republican parties. They are working to chip away at our rights, and are showing us their plans to get there – it’s time to listen and fight back before it’s too late.

That’s why it’s so critical that we enshrine reproductive rights today and ensure that Virginia remains a safe haven for access for future generations.
