Schools across the country are starting to reopen their doors. But we’re unprepared –– teachers lack proper PPE, students aren’t required to wear masks, and social-distancing is almost impossible to enforce.

Our teachers, kids and families are at risk. We have to fight the Republicans’ business-as-usual agenda, where we’re reopening schools before getting COVID-19 under control.

This is not just business as usual: People’s lives are at stake.

We need a Senator who will fight for our teachers. And we need a Senator who will advocate that our most vulnerable students’ families receive federal aid so they can stay home. Teachers are essential. They shouldn’t be forced to put their families at risk during a pandemic.

President Trump recently said that schools should reopen. “You’re losing a lot of lives by keeping things closed,” he said.

But here’s the thing: If our schools open before we can safely deal with the coronavirus, we will put our most vulnerable students, teachers and families at greater risk. 

Here’s what we need to do:

• Ensure that teachers and students have the tools to do online learning
• Provide meals for students who need them, so that no one goes hungry without school lunches.
• Immediately pass Medicare for All so that everyone has access to the care they deserve. 
• Provide emergency assistance to every family, so that parents can stay home with their children, and so that teachers have the means to not return to school before it’s safe to do so.

Earlier this week, a teacher in Houston wrote in the New York Times, "Americans who care about teachers can’t just tweet platitudes during Teacher Appreciation Week. They have to back policy changes that would make teaching an honorable, attractive profession.”
