Friends,

As Iowans continue to recover from the derecho, we want to make sure you have the information you need to protect you and your loved ones from individuals hoping to take advantage of this tragedy.

The Attorney General of Iowa has issued an advisory to our community that scam contractors might be looking to take advantage of vulnerable people after the storm.

These “storm chasers” go door-to-door to try and convince people to use their services for cleanup and repairs. These services are often sub-par, they charge a lot of money upfront, or utilize predatory tactics to encourage customers to sign contracts.

The Iowa AG recommends keeping two things in mind when dealing with a repair contractor:

  1. Be cautious: anyone who shows up out of the blue might not be legitimate
  2. Be thorough: investigate anyone you’re considering paying for services

The Attorney General has more recommendations, all of which you can find here:

Thank you,

Team Abby
