Friend, in moments of crisis, one thing should be obvious: Leaders don’t leave.

But Mitch McConnell adjourned the Senate last week for 25 days anyway—without addressing the economic and public health catastrophes unfolding across our state and country.

The harsh facts: Over 50% of working Kentuckians have filed for unemployment since March. Half of our families have lost income. And more than 40% of our renters are facing the threat of eviction. These aren’t just statistics. This is an SOS. And Mitch is on vacation.

I’m not a senator yet, but I refuse to leave the people of Kentucky high and dry. I’ve spent the last several days traveling all across the state to share my plan for helping the commonwealth recover from the impact of COVID-19. It’s not enough just to mitigate: we have to re-emerge stronger—with a health care system where everyone can afford the care they need, new economic opportunities for families forced into unemployment and poverty, a serious response to the racial and economic inequities that perpetuate that poverty, and a government that works for the people again.

I’ll be sharing and getting feedback on this plan from folks all over our state: from teachers in Northern Kentucky, to postal workers in Perry, to health care workers in Louisville. Recovery is something that happens only if we work together.

The truth is, Mitch’s vacation from serving Kentucky has already been longer than 25 days. It’s going on 36 years since we were top of mind for him in Washington. Even before this pandemic, too many Kentuckians struggled to build a better life because of Mitch’s corruption and failure to fight for the building blocks every American needs: equal access to education, health care and economic opportunity. While we suffer, he’s worked overtime to give tax breaks and backroom deals to corporations and the wealthy.

We deserve better—and in November, we will choose change. Our state can come back from this disaster stronger than ever, but only IF we team up to elect leadership that’ll actually put us first.
