I thought the feeling of winning my first gold medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics would only come once in a lifetime. But, the race was just called: 

I’m officially the Democratic nominee for Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat.

Look, I’m under no illusions about the work it’ll take to win a battleground Senate race as a Democrat in Iowa. Taking on Joni Ernst, Ashley Hinson, and their billionaire-fueled MAGA Machine will be a beast of a challenge — physically, mentally, financially. 

But I’m not your average career politician. I’ve won back-to-back victories in deep red Trump country. Polls show me either tied with or one point ahead of my official Republican opponent, Ashley Hinson. 

This election will be a nail-biter, and it starts right now. 

We have 154 days to bring independents and conservatives into our Prairie Populist coalition; to overcome over $40 million in spending from MAGA megadonors; and to let the world know that working-class Americans own the future.  

Ads, statewide tours, and campaign infrastructure don’t come cheap, and our campaign coffers are nearly empty after a hard-fought and high-cost primary victory. 

The outcome of this race will decide the Senate majority with huge implications for our country, so my team and I need every single solitary ounce of support to hit the ground rolling.
