I realized my family was poor when I was in the second grade. My little brother, my father, and I lived with my grandmother while my father worked as a janitor. Even at that age, I managed our finances every month, and I know just how much my grandmother’s social security check kept us afloat. That check was the only reason we were able to stay in our home and put food on the table.

Social Security is one of the most successful programs in American history. It helped my family survive. But in recent years, extreme politicians have started using our earned benefits as a bargaining chip, putting the financial security of countless Richmonders at stake.

This month, Social Security is turning 85. This milestone needs to serve as a reminder to lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to put partisan games aside and protect Social Security for current and future retirees.

Everyone deserves to retire with dignity, friend — it's really that simple. Will you add your name to join me in fighting to protect Social Security for generations to come?

President Franklin D. Roosevelt made a promise to Americans: if you work hard and pay for your share, America will have your back when you retire. In 2020, over 64 million people are able to live with dignity because of this vital program — including thousands of Richmonders!

But Donald Trump and Senate Republicans think they know better. Time and again, they move to cut Social Security and leave millions of Americans behind.

Extreme politicians — many of them multi-millionaires — shouldn't be the ones determining what working families and retirees need to survive. And too often, politicians propose outrageous cuts to this lifeline to pay for their own failures.

On this month's anniversary, it's more important than ever before that working people say loudly and clearly: hands off our Social Security. Add your name to join me in fighting to protect this program.
