This week, we celebrate some good news for the global surf and conservation community! Our partners at Fundación Rompientes recently submitted a proposal for the creation of "Santuario Piedra del Viento" on the central coast of Chile to legally protect surf breaks, traditional fishermen practices and the area's rich biodiversity.

And it has BEEN APPROVED by the government! We are now waiting for a Presidential signature for its official decree.

This is an amazing win for our Coalition partners in Chile and we will push through to see Santuario Piedra del Viento established as a protected area.

How Does The Sanctuary Protect the Place?

  • The initiative was a direct result of the partnership between Fundación Rompientes and Save The Waves, and is one of the first surf ecosystems to be listed under our Surf Protected Area Networks (SPANs) program.
  • The Sanctuary encourages the protection of over 10,000 acres located on the central coast of Chile.
  • Six surf breaks are located in the Sanctuary, including Topocalma and Puertecillo. 
  • It is the first protected area in Chile to take wave protection and surfing into consideration and management.
  • This approved area is known for its unique scenic beauty, rich biodiversity and ideal habitat for various endemic and endangered species.
  • The Sanctuary also preserves and promotes cultural heritage related to the traditional practice of seaweed harvesting which dates back 300 years.
