I'll tell you something I haven't said to many people. A few months ago, I wasn't sure I'd run for this seat again.

A few months ago, my wife, Ericka, and I talked seriously about me running for Congress, but decided against it.

Then, Tennessee Republicans redrew Congressional maps. to divide communities, weaken Black voting power, and silence people they do not want to represent in Washington.

Working families are tired. Tired of struggling to survive. Tired of politicians choosing power over people. Tired of watching rights get rolled back and everyday, Tennesseeans getting left behind.

Ericka felt it too. In fact, she was the first one to say out loud that it was time I got back into this fight. She was right (of course). The climate had changed, and sitting on the sidelines while they tried to write us out of our own democracy is just not who I am.

I have never run from a hard fight.

As a freshman in the statehouse, I helped take down a corrupt Speaker. I called out a double standard nobody else would touch. I stood up for a Black woman leader when powerful men were trying to tear down everything she'd built. I put myself through school, built businesses from nothing, and took care of my mom when she got sick. None of it was easy, but the fight was always worth it.

This fight is worth it, too — maybe more than any of the fights I’ve taken on in the past.
