Folks, when I was standing on stage with my union brothers and sisters, alongside Graham Platner and Bernie Sanders, I told the crowd a story about my dad. I want to share the same memories with you:
When I was a kid, I went out to the woods with him one day during a strike. He and his fellow loggers weren’t asking for more money — just to hold on to the wages they had. The wealthy landowner showed up and said: Take the pay cut or go home .
I’ll never forget it. I was 11 years old and scared — watching grown men who just wanted to feed their families be told their lives and labor didn’t matter.
When I entered the Maine Senate, I learned fast that the same power I felt in the woods was alive and well in Augusta. Lobbyists could walk into any office and kill a bill that working people needed.
So I kept fighting. I built a majority and became the leader of the Senate.
And as Senate President, we made school meals free. We invested in child care, housing, and healthcare. We passed paid family medical leave.
But whenever my bills threatened the status quo, they were vetoed — by a Democratic governor.
Collective bargaining, capping prescription drug costs: things that would’ve been good for Mainers were vetoed because power and influence just didn’t want them. During my time as Senate president, over 100 of our bills were vetoed — the most in Maine’s history.
That’s where we are right now: power and influence believe they can stop our progress. They think that they can hold us down. So far, they’ve been right. But together, we’re going to prove them wrong.
I can’t do it without you. If you’re with me, will you chip in today to power this campaign through our final stretch? Your donations really make a difference during this critical window before Election Day. [[link removed]]
