Major news, everyone.
Just moments ago, Public Citizen — along with the NAACP and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund — filed a lawsuit in federal court to stop Donald Trump’s Postmaster from disrupting the election.
A quick recap of what Trump has been up to:
- In May, Trump put a Republican mega-donor named Louis DeJoy in charge of the United States Postal Service (even though DeJoy has substantial investments in private companies that actually compete with the USPS).
- DeJoy has implemented drastic service cuts and other changes — which we believe violate federal law — that have led to widespread disruptions in mail delivery.
- These disruptions could disenfranchise countless voters in November, regardless of which candidates they support, if their ballots are not delivered on time.
- Or they could force people to choose between voting safely by mail or risking their lives to vote in person during the worst public health crisis humanity has faced in at least a century.
- It doesn’t even seem to matter to DeJoy (or Trump) that Americans of all political persuasions are relying on the Postal Service more than ever — for food and medicine, for personal finances, for connections with friends and family — as we struggle to endure the coronavirus emergency and resulting economic collapse, which Trump has made so much worse.
- Following a nationwide public outcry, DeJoy said earlier this week that he would suspend some of the service cuts — but not all. Importantly, he did not walk back his plans to slow down delivery of mailed ballots.
There is little doubt about what’s going on here.
Donald Trump aims to undermine the Postal Service in order to interfere with mail-in voting. He said so himself.
We are not going to let him get away with it.
What Trump is doing is immoral.
It’s also illegal.
And it’s a threat to the very foundation of our democracy.
We are going to fight it in court.
But lawsuits — not to mention all the other work we do to preserve government of, by, and for the people — can be expensive.
If you can, please make a donation today to help us win this lawsuit and keep fighting for democracy.
