On the day of our primary election, August 4, one of the largest non-atomic explosions in history tore through Beirut, Lebanon.
Hospitals that were already at capacity because of coronavirus were badly damaged or destroyed, and 300,000 people became homeless in an instant. The people of Lebanon, which imports 90% of its wheat, were already experiencing a crisis of food insecurity. Now, they have less than a month of grain reserves left.
It can be difficult to know how and where to help this humanitarian disaster. Our friends launched the Lebanon Relief Campaign to support trusted groups providing relief on the ground.
Just like we're showing up for our neighbors to make it through this pandemic here at home, we need to show up for our global community. As with marginalized communities here in the U.S., people in Lebanon were already in crisis mode before tragedy struck.
100% of your donation will go through the Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) to support these groups:
Social and Economic Action for Lebanon is providing grants to vetted organizations in Lebanon that focus their efforts on the most pressing needs resulting from this tragedy, including Al Ghina, Arcencial, Beit El Baraka, Lebanon Needs, the Lebanese Red Cross, Nusaned, and Offre Joie.
Direct Relief International (DRI)is a humanitarian aid organization with a mission to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies—without regard to politics, religion, or ability to pay. DRI is partnering with Lebanese American philanthropists to transport shipments of badly needed medicines and medical equipment to hospitals in Lebanon.
ANERA is providing shipments of medicines and health care supplies, as well as organizing clean-up efforts and distributing water, food, hand sanitizer, masks and gloves.
Basmeh & Zeitooneh provides social services to the most poorly served areas in Lebanon, including Arsal, the Bekaa Valley, Tripoli and the Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut. Donations will be used to provide shelter, food, and medication to those affected by the explosion and its repercussions.
Teach for Lebanon (TFL) is a Lebanese NGO working to ensure that all children in Lebanon, regardless of socioeconomic background, have access to quality education. In the wake of the crisis, TFL has mobilized to provide psycho-social support and support to schools directly impacted by the explosion.
Now more than ever, we’re banding together in the spirit of solidarity to show up for people who are most impacted during this time of extreme hardship. Thank you for showing up for our global community.
