Friend,
97 days
ago, my colleagues and I passed the HEROES Act in the House, a
sweeping, bipartisan piece of legislation to put America’s families on
the path to recovery. But our plan to invest in schools, local
governments, and COVID-19 testing, tracing, and treatment measures,
and to support essential workers, the newly unemployed, and low- and
middle-income Americans was met with such fierce opposition from
Republicans that Mitch McConnell just adjourned the Senate until
September without reaching any agreement.
Here in California,
our families can’t afford to pay the price of the GOP’s obstruction.
Our state has recorded nearly 650,000 COVID-19 cases and over 11,500
deaths, although that number is almost certainly much higher. Los
Angeles County leads in both confirmed cases and number of deaths, a
grim and urgent reminder to continue practicing social distancing,
wearing a mask, and doing your part to slow the spread of this
disease.
Coronavirus isn’t finished with us, so we can’t rest
until working families receive the relief they’re owed -- that’s why,
although my colleagues and I have returned to our respective districts
for August recess, I’m still fighting to make sure that Americans have
the support necessary to weather this storm. And as always, I’ll
continue to keep you updated on the ways in which we’re working to
assist families in need.
Stay safe, Ted
