From maritime security and emergency response to public safety and disaster preparedness, these organizations play an essential role in protecting our communities year-round. “Long Islanders rely on the dedicated men and women of the Suffolk County Police Department and the United States Coast Guard every day,” Andrew said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity my team had to see their work firsthand and to thank them for everything they do to keep our communities safe.” Andrew appreciates the Suffolk County Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard for taking the time to host his team and for their continued commitment to protecting Long Island families. View More ANDREW IN THE NEWS House members from Long Island say caucuses reflect priorities, from military to environment Garbarino (R-Bayport) — the only Long Island member of the House to chair a major committee, the Committee on Homeland Security — also listed 38 caucuses on his website. Those include seven co-chairmanships or vice chairs, including the Problem Solvers Caucus, the Italian American Congressional Delegation, SALT (State and Local Tax) Caucus, Climate Solutions Caucus, and Lupus Caucus. Other groups listed are the Live Events Caucus, Long Island Sound Caucus, Horse Caucus, and Zoo & Aquarium Caucus. "As vice chair of the Problem Solvers Caucus and co-chair of the SALT Caucus, I’m able to work directly on issues that impact Long Island families every day, from affordability to finding practical bipartisan solutions," Garbarino said. At the same time, he said caucuses focused on issues like public safety, the environment and autism awareness help him to make sure he is hearing directly on those issues from advocates, leaders, and families back home. Casework Highlight: Resolving Passport Issues for Family Vacation A Long Island mother recently contacted Andrew’s office after learning that her 16-year-old daughter's passport application had been delayed due to an issue dating back more than a decade. After hearing from the family, Andrew’s team immediately began working with the State Department to resolve the issue and ensure the application could move forward. Just days later, the passport was issued and in the constituent’s hands in time for both an upcoming class trip and a family vacation. WHAT'S NEW IN CONGRESS Expanding Cancer Screenings for 9/11 Responders and Survivors This week, Andrew joined a bipartisan bicameral letter urging the Department of Health and Human Services to expand cancer screening coverage under the World Trade Center Health Program for 9/11 responders and survivors. The letter calls for coverage of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing and skin cancer examinations, which can help detect cancer earlier among individuals at increased risk due to exposure at Ground Zero. Earlier this year, Andrew helped secure lifetime funding and full staffing for the World Trade Center Health Program, ensuring the program can continue providing critical care and support for responders and survivors for years to come. Introducing the Community Flood Resilience Act This week, Andrew introduced the Community Flood Resilience Act, bipartisan legislation designed to help communities better prepare for and recover from flooding events. The legislation would allow certain FEMA mitigation grant funds to be used for innovative community-based flood insurance policies that can provide faster financial assistance following major storms. “For Long Island communities that face growing flood risks every year, we need faster and more flexible tools to help families and small businesses recover after major storms,” Andrew said. “Long Islanders know firsthand the devastating impact flooding can have, and this legislation is about helping communities better prepare for the next storm before it happens.” Thanks for reading!
