The Conversation by Markos: Trump’s weakness is dragging down his party

President Donald Trump is weak.

Politically. Physically. Emotionally. Ethically. Pick a category. It fits.

This week’s top stories all highlighted just how diminished and pathetic he
has become.

For all his obsession with gold, everything Trump touches turns to crap. And
remarkably, he doesn’t seem to care.

He’s still fixated on his ballroom, his triumphal arch, and his reflecting
pool. Now his team is talking about putting his face on a new $250 bill,
helpfully handing Democrats another way to highlight how unaffordable daily
life has become.

The one area where Trump has demonstrated strength is purging Republicans
deemed insufficiently loyal. But even that reveals a deeper weakness: His need
for personal validation outweighs the interests of his party.

And Republicans are paying the price, saddled with candidates like Ken Paxton,
who, as an attorney, gave a

sweetheart deal to a literal pedophile and who is making what should be a safe
Republican seat competitive.

We don’t even have to wait until November to see how Trump’s actions are
self-defeating. The elected officials he helped drive from office are
increasingly willing and able to sabotage what passes for his agenda, such as
reparations for Jan. 6 insurrectionists.

Meanwhile …

My god, they are so freakin’ weird. On the plus side, they can’t get Trump to
shut up. Bad for them; great for us.

Back on May 12, he accidentally told
<[link removed]>
the truth: “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think
about anybody.”

This past Wednesday, he added
<[link removed]>
during a Cabinet meeting, “I don’t care about the midterms,” which Republicans
fighting for their political survival surely appreciated.

Then he gifted
<[link removed]>
Democrats with yet another banger: “We don’t need oil. We don’t need the
Strait [of Hormuz]. We don’t need anything.”

Trump doesn’t care about Americans’ financial struggles. He doesn’t care about
his party’s political future. He doesn’t seem particularly concerned with
governing.

He cares only about grifting and building monuments to himself.

Republicans are trapped following a weak, feeble, self-absorbed man who
mistakes loyalty for leadership and ego for strength.

They can’t possibly suffer enough because of it.
