John,
When President Trump appointed a major campaign donor as postmaster general, that was bad enough.
But Louis DeJoy, the Trump donor turned postmaster general, has turned out to be even worse for democracy than we could have possibly imagined. DeJoy has launched a series of attacks on the USPS and mail service that have already led to significant delays in mail delivery, and that could threaten the ability of Americans to safely vote by mail this fall. He did this after Trump’s repeated public attacks on voting by mail. Because the coronavirus pandemic makes voting by mail the safest and most secure option for many voters, this is nothing less than an attack on our democracy.
DeJoy is not just another unqualified Trump crony in the government—he’s using his position of power to attempt to influence the election, in order to benefit President Trump. That’s outrageous.
And even with DeJoy’s recent announcement that, following extensive public pressure, he is suspending some controversial initiatives until after the election, more needs to be done: the damage and policy changes must be reversed, and the USPS must be given adequate funding to ensure mail service is not slowed or interrupted.
The Delivering for America Act would prevent further changes to postal service standards and restore service to previous levels, ensuring that DeJoy is not able to further cripple mail delivery and attack our democracy. The House will be voting on this bill soon—your members of Congress need to hear from you. Will you email your members of Congress now and ask them to vote yes on the Delivering for America Act?
The fact that DeJoy suspended some of his policy changes this week after he faced intense public pressure shows that it can be done again. The pressure is working, and we need to keep it up.
CREW is working on multiple fronts to hold DeJoy accountable for these attacks on mail service, as well as for his financial conflicts of interest. We’ll provide more updates soon about what else you can do—for now, please contact your members of Congress in support of the Delivering for America Act.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
