John, we won’t
beat around the bush. The Supreme Court is corrupt.
And here’s a prime example: Justice Clarence Thomas has accepted roughly
$4 million in gifts since 2004 — and disclosed almost none of it.^1
We wish we were joking. Private jet flights. Yacht vacations. Luxury
resorts. Real estate deals benefiting his family. Even private school
tuition payments for his grandnephew.
And while accepting these gifts, Thomas repeatedly ruled on cases
benefiting the same right-wing political movement backed by some of his
biggest benefactors — Republican billionaire Harlan Crow and Federalist
Society power broker Leonard Leo.^2
We’re talking about decisions gutting voting rights, weakening campaign
finance laws, shielding dark money donors, and siding with corporations
over workers.
That’s the real scandal here: the same wealthy operatives funding luxury
lifestyles for Supreme Court justices are also helping shape the laws and
rulings that protect their own power.
This is exactly what happens when the most powerful court in the country
has no enforceable ethics code, no meaningful accountability, and justices
who believe they can police themselves.
