Calling for real action to boost trade and cut bills
The Government could have used the King’s Speech this month to chart a new,
ambitious course for the country. Instead, the speech was full of weak
promises, unable to tackle the stark issues our country faces.
That’s why we forced a vote in Parliament on something that would bring real
change - a new UK-EU Customs Union. It’s the single biggest thing we could do
to grow our economy and cut the cost of living - slashing red tape and boosting
British businesses.
With Labour, the Conservatives, and Reform all voting against our plans, they
have failed to live up to the ambition our country deserves.
We are the only party standing up for the real change people are crying out
for.

Our best ever winning streak - May elections recap
It was another set of record-breaking results for the Liberal Democrats this
May - with our eighth consecutive set of gains in local council elections!
In England, we gained control of four councils (East Surrey, Portsmouth,
Stockport, and West Surrey), held control of 11 others, and gained 155
councillors, electing 844 in total.
In Scotland, we elected 10 MSPs, more than doubling our number, while in
Wales, Jane Dodds was reelected to the Senedd.

It’s clear - we are the voice for those who want real change, not dangerous
populism. For those who want to build Britain up, not burn it all down.
Thank you to everyone who supported our campaigns in any way or stood for
election.

This week, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges compared the health impact
of screen time on children to smoking, saying that doctors should routinely ask
about screen time and social media use when seeing younger patients.
For too long, social media giants have been allowed to profit from addictive
algorithms while treating children's mental health as a mere afterthought.
The Government is moving far too slowly on this. We have pushed for quicker
timelines and stronger action through recognition in law of the harms of
addictive design and a film-style age rating system.

These steps go alongside our wider plans to better support mental health,
including automatic mental health check ups when people experience vulnerable
points in their lives, like losing a job, leaving the military, or giving
birth, and publishing a mental health strategy; something the Government has
still failed to do.
Defending our interests abroad
Last year, the Government made substantial cuts to the aid budget - something
we believe was morally wrong and strategically illiterate.
While we supported its commitment to raise defence spending to 2.5% of GDP,
we advocated different ways to do this which wouldn't undermine our soft power
- including by raising the Digital Services Tax on the biggest tech and social
media companies.
International aid gives us vast influence abroad, helping us promote
Britain's interests and protect the world's most vulnerable people. It is
Russia and China filling the vacuum left by our absence and spreading their
influence instead.
Ed Davey MP raised this with the Prime Minister directly last week, and
Monica Harding MP, our International Development Spokesperson, has also written
to the Foreign Secretary to press the Government on whether it will rule out
any further cuts, as has been rumoured.

Liberal Democrats have always championed international development - we're
proud to be the party which enshrined in law the commitment to spend 0.7% of
Gross National Income on aid. We're calling on the Government to reverse its
cut to 0.3%, and to set out a pathway to return to 0.7%.
Since May’s local elections, we’re already celebrating more wins - in fact,
we're theonly party to have made any gains since the election!

In the council by-elections since, we’ve gained a seat in the Malvern Hills

held a seat inDorset

and took a seat off the Conservatives inSwansea

Congratulations to those elected and their teams, and thank you to everyone
who stood and helped our campaigns, whether you won this time or not.
