John, Trump just settled his sham lawsuit against the IRS – and now he’s trying to walk away with a $1.8 billion fund he can hand out however he wants.
Here’s what happened: Trump sued the IRS – an agency he controls – for $10 billion. Then, his own Justice Department, led by handpicked loyalists, cut a settlement behind closed doors – just days before they would be required to defend their position in court. [2]
With your help, Common Cause helped force this scheme into the spotlight, fighting back in the courts and Congress.
That pressure mattered – and helped collapse Trump’s ridiculous $10 billion demand. And our pressure is part of why 93 lawmakers filed a brief agreeing that this case is one big heist in the making. [3]
But this fight is far from over. The settlement still creates a massive $1.8 billion fund with few public details and even fewer safeguards.
