Alabama Governor Kay Ivey voided the results of the May 19 primary elections in State Senate Districts 25 and 26, elections that already happened, in which real voters cast real votes — and called a new special primary for August 11. This is what the redistricting war looks like when MAGA is executing at full speed. Two Trump-appointed judges on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals froze a court-ordered map that had been drawn specifically to give Black voters in Montgomery fair representation, and signaled they will likely vacate that order entirely when briefing is complete. That decision gave Ivey the opening to void the primary results and revert to the 2021 Republican-drawn maps that a federal judge had already found likely violated the Voting Rights Act. People voted. A governor declared their votes void. A court staffed with Trump appointees handed her the authority to do it. This is the same legal playbook that Alabama has been running since the Supreme Court's Callais ruling gutted the Voting Rights Act, filing emergency motions, seeking immediate Supreme Court intervention through Justice Clarence Thomas, and racing to implement Republican-drawn maps before the November midterms. This is not a legal dispute about maps. This is MAGA using the courts they built to choose their voters before November. Exactly as designed. This is not just about Alabama. It is happening across the country. Kemp is calling a special redistricting session in Georgia. Tennessee already eliminated its only majority-Black congressional district. Virginia's Supreme Court threw out a voter-approved redistricting referendum. And now Alabama has established that you can void an election's results after voters have already cast their ballots — as long as you have the right courts in place to let you do it.
