Indivisibles,

Last night, Senator Kamala Harris made history by accepting the nomination
for the Vice Presidency. As Biden’s VP pick, Sen. Harris is the first
Black woman and first South Asian woman to run on a major party ticket.
Women of color are the backbone of this country and the Democratic
coalition, and it’s about time that young women of color see themselves
reflected at the highest levels of government. She acknowledged the strong
women who paved the way, like Mary Church Terrell, Shirley Chisholm and
her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris. She’s the first, but she won’t be the
last.

Besides what she means for representation, Kamala’s time as Attorney
General of California and her progressive record in the Senate give her
the confidence and leadership experience we need in the White House. As a
senator, she fought for issues we care about: protecting undocumented
youth, co-signing Senator Sanders’ Medicare for All bill, and holding the
Trump administration accountable for corruption. She’s earned a reputation
as a talented inquisitor, someone who can’t be intimidated into backing
down in the face of injustice -- you’ll remember her uncompromising
questioning of Brett Kavanaugh and Attorney General Barr during each of
their hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

(Based on those performances, the Harris-Pence debates are about to be a
whole lot of fun.)

More than ever, we need leadership that prioritizes justice and facts.
Trump watched as the country demanded justice for George Floyd and Breonna
Taylor, and rather than utter the words “Black Lives Matter” he
[ [link removed]- ]deployed federal forces against his own citizens and labeled them
terrorists. Even after we’ve lost over 150,000 lives to the pandemic, he
tries to [ [link removed]- ]manipulate the facts and undermine the CDC to save face. When
President Biden and Vice President Harris walk into the White House, the
work begins to restore the will and well-being of the people.

A lot has to change if we are ever going to address the issues we care
about: gun violence, immigration reform, health care, and child care, to
name a few. It's a lot to tackle, but Joe and Kamala have help. All week,
we’ve had the pleasure of hearing from powerful women who are already
working towards November -- and everything that comes after we win. New
leaders like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: she's the future of the
Democratic Party and a supporter of the Biden-Harris ticket because it
represents the opportunity for progressive values to make it to the White
House. Or long-time fighters in the Senate, like Sen. Elizabeth Warren: a
woman with many plans, but none closer to her heart than making sure
families have access to affordable, quality child care so that our country
can thrive at its most basic level. Who knows what we will achieve when
these great minds come together to take our country back?

But, last night, former President Barack Obama reminded us of the most
fundamental truth of democracy: it doesn’t work unless we do. He used his
time at the DNC to address us all individually:

“You can give our democracy new meaning. You can take it to a better
place. You’re the missing ingredient — the ones who will decide whether or
not America becomes the country that fully lives up to its creed.”

Trump and his enablers are counting on us to forfeit. When our politicians
convince us there's no hope, no use, we stay divided and unengaged. But
the status quo is only upheld when the people can't see their power. It’s
thanks to the perseverance of those who came before us for whom this
country never worked that we can fight for something even better -- for a
more perfect union.

We’re working hard to get team Biden-Harris across the finish line in
November and help Build Back Better in 2021. All week, Indivisibles
everywhere have been phonebanking and textbanking alongside the DNC as
part of our second Week of Action. We plan to ride the wave of DNC
excitement by carrying our work into a weekend of direct voter contact
events. To kick off the weekend, we’re hosting a livestream for all of our
volunteers featuring our co-founders Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg and an
exciting guest: Squad Member Rep. Ayanna Pressley! Join us on Friday,
August 21st at 8 pm ET to talk about all of the amazing things our
Indivisible groups are doing (and how you can get involved) to reach the
voters we need to win! [ [link removed]- ]Click here to register for the livestream event.

Tonight is the main event: make sure you join us tonight to watch Joe
Biden accept the party nomination on the last day of the convention

And, if you want to watch and rewatch Kamala’s speech, don’t forget about
our YouTube [ [link removed]- ]playlist with all of this week’s speakers!
