Dear Neighbors,

I hope you and your family had a meaningful Memorial Day weekend as we honored the service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for our country.

As we prepare to enter June, we also recognize Pride Month and Gun Violence Awareness Month.

These observances remind us of the importance of dignity, safety, and community. I remain committed to building a future where every person can live openly, safely, and with opportunity.

A few weeks ago, I joined my friend Rep. Terri Sewell to celebrate the passage of the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act, named for her mother, who died of cancer.

This bill expands access to early cancer screenings through Medicare, helping save lives by catching cancer sooner. I will keep fighting to make lifesaving care more accessible for families in Illinois and across the country.

The beautiful Lake Michigan beaches are open for the summer, and I encourage everyone heading to the lakefront to put safety first.

Lifeguards are on duty daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Labor Day, and swimming is only allowed during those hours at designated beaches.

Before you go, review the beach flags and pay attention to weather and water conditions, especially when hazard statements are in effect.

I joined Richard Chew on WCPT last week to talk about the ongoing attacks on voting rights and Black representation. The Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais gave politicians another opportunity to weaken majority-Black districts and silence Black voters.

Sixty years after the Voting Rights Act, the fight for equal representation is far from over. I’ll keep fighting to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and protect every American’s right to be heard.
